Pet Blocks

I’ve been dabbling in wooden toys for my LO.  Not only because I like the natural aspect but also I can make them totally gender neutral which seems hard to find in kids toys.
The first I made is a snake modeled after my own gray-banded kingsnake Gandalf that turned out okay but not exactly what I invisioned.  I wood burned the pattern on and left it unfinished wood.  Might do a beeswax polish if I get some.

But I really like this new project I’m working on.  I got the idea after seeing how much my LO likes looking at pictures and really recognizes who is in the picture.
So I decided to make blocks with pictures mod podged on to them.  I’m hoping to make it into a series of all our pets and then maybe do family members so he can have a whole playset.

Here are the first 2: Wally the dog (you can see the other side in the mirror) and Indy the cat.
I cut the blocks using a powered hand saw and then sanded each edge buttery smooth.
I used pictures on the front and back and then scrapbook paper for the sides.  I also wrote Wally’s name on the top, so it can maybe be a learning toy as well.  So far I put 3 layers of mod podge on them.
I haven’t let him play with them yet as I’m still putting mod podge layers on and he’s teething right now.  I don’t want him to chew on the mod podge finish.  It’s kid safe but not food grade.
I think they came out super cute.  They’d be cute paperweights as well!
